Creative Director

The Whistle is looking for an outstanding Creative Director to join our growing Product & Design team, leading our visual brand and software design strategies across a variety of end points.

As the head of a small and nimble design team, you will work closely with the product managers, UX & UI designers, and engineers to iterate on and refine designs during ideation, iteration, and as they are developed.

You are passionate about software products and obsess over their usability, and with improving people’s interaction with these. You’re a design enthusiast with a history of delivering exceptional multi-platform design concepts. You understand how people use software, and the importance of leading-edge user interfaces. And you can get the best out of talent to help realize your vision. 

Responsibilities:

  • Be the definitive voice of design and interaction for the company, including leading direction across multiple software products and use cases.
  • Lead a team of user experience and graphic designers, working with your team to create advanced and complex interfaces to support our audience and stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with product management, UI design, and engineering to define and implement innovative solutions for the product direction, interfaces, visuals and experience.
  • Present, promote and defend designs and key milestone deliverables to peers and executive level stakeholders.
  • Keep the company on the cutting edge of design principles, go-to-market strategies, and general visual brand definition and development.
  • Get hands on with UX and/or UI, dictating direction while also creating yourself.
  • Manage, build, and develop a team of creative minds.
  • Conceptualize original ideas that bring simplicity and user friendliness to complex design roadblocks.
  • Work with graphic designers and creative directors to iterate interfaces and creative requirements.
  • Stay on the zeitgeist of design trends, patterns, and best-of breeds in our industry (and others).
  • Establish and promote design guidelines, best practices and standards. 

 

Requirements:

  • 5-7 years experience of user experience design for software (web sites, apps, etc.)
  • Demonstrated leadership of a team or project in the software space.
  • Experience designing interactive media and/or news sites and apps for mouse, touch, and 10 foot user paradigms.
  • Experience with responsive web design.
  • Expertise with the Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Solid experience in specifying and designing wireframes, user flows, process flows and site maps to iterate layout and flows.
  • Experience working with a team of graphic designers to ensure functional viability of fully designed software.
  • Proficiency in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, at least at a functional understanding level.
  • Excellent visual design skills with sensitivity to user-system interaction .
  • Contribute to and help manage a UX design pattern library (layout grids, font libraries, color palette, icon sets and other brand assets.)
  • Ability to present your designs and sell your solutions to various stakeholders.
  • Ability to solve problems creatively and effectively.
  • Up-to-date with the latest UI trends, techniques, and technologies.
  • BS/MS in Human-Computer Interaction, Interaction Design, Graphic Design, or related experience.

 

Extra Points:

  • Experience designing for sports or youth audiences.
  • Experience with A/B testing procedures and design.
  • Passion for sports, especially Boston or Bay area teams.
  • Expertise in various bar games, including, but not limited to, foosball, shufflepuck, ping pong, or a working knowledge of the dark art of darts.

User Experience (UX) Designer

The Whistle is looking for an outstanding visual and human interface designer to join our growing Product & Design team to improve existing web and mobile products and build new ones.

As a key member of a small and nimble team, you will work closely with the product managers, UX designers, and engineers to iterate on and refine designs during ideation, iteration, and as they are developed.

You’re a design enthusiast with a history of delivering exceptional multi-platform design concepts You have extreme attention to detail and are meticulous about how you communicate and document your designs.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with product management, UI design, and engineering to define and implement innovative solutions for the product direction, interfaces, visuals and experience.
  • Construct complex, high fidelity wireframes and information architectures to define layout, user flow, interaction models, etc.
  • Utilize a variety of design methodologies, including sketching, wireframing, and prototyping to help visualize your ideas.
  • Conceptualize original ideas that bring simplicity and user friendliness to complex design roadblocks.
  • Work with graphic designers and creative directors to iterate interfaces and creative requirements.
  • Present and defend designs and key milestone deliverables to peers and executive level stakeholders.
  • Conduct user research and evaluate user feedback.
  • Adhere to design guidelines, best practices and brand standards. 

 

Requirements:

  • Contribute to and help manage a UX design pattern library (layout grids, font libraries, color palette, icon sets and other brand assets.)
  • Ability to present your designs and sell your solutions to various stakeholders.

User Interface Designer

As a key member of a small and nimble team, you will work closely with the product managers, UX designers, and engineers to iterate on and refine designs during ideation, iteration, and as they are developed.

  • Work with provided wireframes, user flows, process flows and site maps to effectively communicate interaction and design idea.
  • Present and defend designs and key milestone deliverables to peers and executive level stakeholders.
  • Create high fidelity comps adhering to development handoff procedures, such as redlines, style guidelines, and graphic production.
  • Conduct user research and evaluate user feedback.
  • Establish and promote design guidelines, best practices and standards.

 

Requirements:

  • 2-5 years experience of user interface design for software (web sites, apps, etc.)
  • Demonstrable UI design skills with a strong portfolio
  • Expertise in Adobe Creative Suite, especially Photoshop and Illustrator

Managing Editor at The Whistle 

This is your opportunity to get in on the ground floor of an exciting initiative and play a key impact role guiding a team of sports writers charged with developing and curating content for our digital platforms. Additionally, you will be responsible for increasing web traffic to our platforms and helping to build an audience across our platforms.

   • Do you have a strong passion for sports?
   • Do you have experience with kids/teens media?
   • Are you an experienced writer/journalist/blogger?
   • Can you manage a team?
   • Can you deliver under tight deadlines?
   • Do you have proven success on digital platforms (web, mobile, YouTube, etc.)?

Qualifications :
   • A minimum of seven years of professional experience including developing and directing web-related projects/programs
   • At least three to five years of successful management and/or team leadership experience, preferably in the sports or kids space
   • A solid track record of developing projects and managing them from inception to launch with proven digital success
   • The ability to multi-task, meet deadlines and manage multiple complex projects simultaneously
   • Mastery of social media and digital interaction; experience working with social networking functionality/technology is highly desirable
   • Knowledge of SEO best practices
   • Experience creating metrics reports and analyzing their implications to guide editorial strategy
   • Experience with YouTube channel management and content creation a plus

Internships

Tasks will vary on a day-to-day basis, and you’ll have the opportunity to work with different departments to get a sense of the different facets of startup life. At the start of the internship, you’ll have a call with our intern coordinator, Alex to discuss your background, interests, and goals for the internship. If there’s anything that seems particularly interesting and fun to you, let us know!

Production Intern:

More specifically, tasks at hand will include
   • Comb the Internet and social media to identify trends and great stories that could become article for TheWhistle.com or features for our television show.    
   • Fact-check and research as needed, including athlete background info for upcoming shoots, identifying kids sports websites we could acquire, research
   • Review partner video content to identify content that can be used in the show and for the web -- this includes drafting proposals on potential segment topics and edits to raw footage

Qualifications:

Basic production experience including:
   • Research (for on-screen graphic info, fact-checking and creation of interview questions)
   • Writing skills (to write questions, voice overs)
   • Technical skills/experience a plus
   • After Effects, Avid, Final Cut Pro X a plus
   • Experience shooting with DSLR cameras. 
   • On-camera experience a bonus

Editorial Intern:

More specifically, tasks at hand will include:
   • Comb the Internet and social media to identify trends and great stories that could become article for TheWhistle.com or features for our television show.
   • Fact-check and research as needed, including athlete background info for upcoming shoots, identifying kids sports websites we could acquire, research
   • Review partner video content to identify content that can be used in the show and for the web -- this includes drafting proposals on potential segment topics and edits to raw footage

Qualifications
   • Ability to think and deliver content through the lens of a kid
   • Experience with GIFs, memes, Twitter, Facebook and Google+
   • Experience working in a CMS (Content Management System, like Drupal)    • Photoshop knowledge preferred
   • Self-starter, independent worker

Start date: Fall, 2013
End date: Ongoing, must be available for minimum of 3 months
Compensation: Interns receive a travel stipend
Location: We are currently located in Soho, NYC at 175 Varick Street
Hours: Negotiable, but we encourage interns to commit to two full-days of work each week for the duration of the internship.
